----------------------------------------------------------------------
Subject: IBM RT/PC Announced!
Date: Tue, 21 Jan 86 10:39:45 -0500
From: Found in a Bottle
A summary: the workstation is in two forms, a desktop
and a floor model. The price range for the basic units is
$11,700 to $19,510. The workstations have a PC-compatible bus
so can run older PC peripherals. A 286 coprocessor board for
the system allows DOS applications to run on the system,
concurrently with AIX.
Three displays were also announced: the 6153 advanced monochrome
12" 712x512, the 6154 14" (same resolution), and the 6155
extended mono 15" 1024x768.
There is also a streaming tape and tablet.
The announced operating system, AIX, is system V based with some
extensions. Several application systems were also announced: SQL/RT
data base, PC Personal graPHIGS, RT/F77, RT Basic, and RT Pascal
(in addition, of course, to C and assembler), CADAM, CIEDS, RS/1,
UNIRAS, WPS/Interleaf, Applix IA, IMSL, Samna, Solomon III.
I understand from PC week the clamshell (IBM's lap top) is also
announced today. I thought people might be interested in this announcement
as soon as possible. Perhaps some of the people who have had this machine
for the last few months can now tell us about it. If you wish we will
cover your "From:" field as we have done in this case.
