[mod.protocols.appletalk] new version of EFS

Tappan@G.BBN.COM (Dan Tappan) (07/25/86)

I have been doing some work on EFS and have a new version with
the following features:

. Works with either old or new Roms (I haven't tested it with the
"HFS in RAM" but it should work). Volumes are still MFS.

. Volumes are mounted via a desk accessory. Multiple volumes can
be mounted at once.

. Installs itself in high memory to save system heap space (compile
time option if you really need to extra screen buffer).

. Server lookup via NBP (see below)

. Optimization of block reads, small writes and GetFileInfoByID lookups.

. Various and sundry bug fixes to make it work with various programs
(eg Keeper).

. Associated changes to the server daemon.

. Customizable defaults for remote host and user.

The new server daemon comes with my own "improved version of the UNIX
appletalk libraries" (I wonder how many there are out there? Someone is going
to have to do a merge..).

It also makes use of some changes I have made to the UDP gateway code.
these include:
. Server based routing. This avoids having to build in routing tables.
. Changes to allow multiple appletalk nets.
. Server based NBP forwarding.

These aren't required for the new EFS as long as your SEAGate box has some
way of forwarding NBP packets on to the Unix hosts.

If there is interest I can make this available for beta testing.

Dan,
Mitre has multiple Sun 2s and 3s, plus various VAXen on Ethernet into
a VAX mail host. At the other end of the yellow cable will shortly
be a Kinetics FastPath gateway for a small Appletalk network. For
the time being (and maybe forever) we'll be running TFTP and MacIP
into these mainly UN*X hosts. If what you're working on is roughly
compatible with this sort of arrangement, I'm interested.

Good luck.
