Subject: CAP/EFS on 4.3BSD

The answer to the question of EFS and CAP running on 4.3BSD/Ultrix 1.2 is that
EFS will run on 4.3 but CAP won't, although the changes to CAP to effect this
are supposedly not major (I haven't had time to look).

The latest version of CAP, Distribution 2.01, has been verified to
work under BSD 4.3, Ultrix 1.2, and Ultrix 1.1. Ultrix 1.1 is similar
enough to BSD 4.2 to allow one to make the statement that it probably
works under a standard BSD 4.2 system (anyone done this?). However,
one should note that the version of Ultrix 1.1 that D2.01 was tested
under has quite a number of bug fixes and other local modifications
(like subnetting) installed. Some baseline tests have been done under
the Sun Unix 2.0 and IBM ACIS Unix 4.2 which indicate full
functionality in these environments is feasible.

Distribution 2.00 requires a number of changes to run under BSD 4.3;
most of these are due to some (imprudent) design decisions about the
methodology to use in the lowest level of communications with the
AppleTalk to Ethernet gateway. Thus, one cannot consider it suitable
for general use in the BSD 4.3 environment without major changes. The
revised methodology in Distribution 2.01 due to Dan Tappan at BBN
gives higher flexibility and generality at a cost of slightly
increased complexity.

As a sidenote, with Distribution 2.01 and the modified gateway
software from Dan Tappan at BBN, Columbia has been able to use the
Ethernet as a AppleTalk backbone (e.g. AppleTalk-Ethernet-AppleTalk).
(To be specific, we tried MacServe and it works fine). Thanks Dan!
