[mod.protocols.appletalk] Mac-NFS

magorian@UMD5.UMD.EDU.UUCP (04/07/87)

Does anyone know the status of implementations of NFS on the Mac (who's working
on it, details of how it's coming)? Will Sun be putting out a version them-
selves, similar to PC-NFS? Thanks for the info...

Just smoke, no fire - but there must be a smoke making machine here
somewhere:

I have been trying to purchase TOPS-unix for a Sun. After taking with
the vendors involved I get the notion that Sun is doing some closed
door intense discussion to decide what to do with TOPS. I believe they
are hoping it will be the ticket to bring the Mac into the NFS world,
since functionally TOPS and NFS are similar. Probably they are making
some hard choices about what of each standard they can preserve in the
Mac environment. But this is all speculation...

What actually do I know?

1) Centram is refering TOPS -unix customers back to their unix vendors.
2) Sun has not made TOPS available for SUN OS.
3) No one can say anything about Mac NFS.

I hope they will make an announcement soon. -j

citi (the center for information technology integration at the
university of michigan) is writing an nfs client for the macintosh.
(note that apple has (or will have) nfs under a/ux; our work is
targeted toward the mac+.)

the design is complete, the implementation nearly so (would be, were we
not trapped in a twisty maze of turning GetCatInfo calls), and testing
has begun in earnest.

citi's macnfs is based on the citi macip drivers, described here a few
weeks ago; rpc/xdr is also implemented as a driver.

citi's macnfs project is partially supported by apple computer.

This implies that the drivers are complete and working to some extent. Any
time estimate on their release?

I have been dealing rather extensively with Centram in the past few
weeks. We have TOPS running on our Pyramids with numerous copies for
Macintoshes (300). We have also had exstensive contact with Sun.
I am under the impression that Sun will be taking over Centram because
they have a big market share of IBM-PC and Apple Macintosh networking
products. I it *my belief* that Centram will continue to sell the TOPS
product.

TOPS and PC-NFS are targetting two very different markets. TOPS has
been up to now targetted at small offices that have Macs, PCs, or
a mixture of the two. It is a good product for this kind of environment.
PC-NFS is much more expensive, and assumes an existing network with
larger machines. I would guess that Sun is trying to have products
with would meet a broad spectrum of needs, not replace TOPS with PC-NFS.

Mac-NFS exists. The excellent work was done by the University of Mich.
I believe the work was sponsered by Apple, and based on Sun's NFS code.
I haven't heard very promising things about the product getting out
because of various lawyers (there are three layers: U of Mich., Sun and
Apple).

Cheers,
