[mod.protocols.tcp-ip] RFC950

REINER%November%ti-csl.CSNET@CSNET-RELAY.ARPA (07/09/86)

	 SUBJECT:  QUESTION CONCERNING RFC950

         RFC950 specifies two new ICMP message types, Address Mask Request
         and Address Mask Reply. They are used to find the address mask
         for a given subnet. They specify the types, AM1 to represent
         an address mask request message and AM2 to represent an address
         mask reply message.

         Question: What numerical values are associated with AM1 and AM2 for
                    the type field in an ICMP header?

         Within RFC792-Internet Control Message Protocol, there is a list of
         message types used by ICMP, none of which reflect the type field
         representation of AM1 or AM2.

Lisa,

See Appendix IV at the end of RFC-950. The assigned numbers are AM1 = 17,
AM2 = 18.
