Hi!. I'm a novice with tcp/ip and Sun systems and UNIX. Receiving roled in a Sun 3/180 the other day. Our Comp Sci department has a number of UNIX systems on various machines all talking on an ethernet. The systems person at Comp Sci said he had to tell all his UNIX machines the ip net address I am giving my Sun before they will all babble relatively understandably at each other. Is this really true? Is there no "hello I'm me" packet at the ip level such that I could just plug my Sun into the ether and have tcp/ip work?
