I guess I have two more questions: 1. Should we encapsulate IP over Starlan the Blue Book (old ethernet) way or the 802.2 way? I would have to argue for now to do it the Blue Book way because with MAC level bridges connecting an ethernet to a starlan the Blue Book ethernet hosts couldn't talk to the 802.2/3 Starlan hosts. 2. Awful question of the day: should we (the Internet community, etc.) ever ever convert to using 802.2 IP encapsulations over ethernet? If we don't, we're not going to find that some hosts can't talk to one another in certain network configurations involving MAC level bridges. If we do, we're probably going to suffering from the bruises for two or three years. If we should convert, then when? I *am* sorry to have asked the latter question, really. But it comes up more and more often these days. Also, re: my first message on the topic, sorry, I was making it up as I was going along and in one draft I decided to define some term which meant 'MAC level bridge' and then I realized I could say 'MAC level bridge' and I left this line at the beginning of the message saying "Let me define something to avoid confusion: (great gaping hole)"... - john -------
