A couple of weeks ago, I posted a query about Telnet implementations that sent Ascii with bit 8 set (parity, or whatever). The question was brought on when I ran across code that religiously masked off the high bit before passing it to a PC's display. Sun's PC NFS Telnet client (VT100 emulator) is said to send parity. Unspecified Unix 'getty' programs make the Telnet server send parity, which goes away once you're logged in. TOPS-20 systems have a transparent mode, used by terminals where the 8th bit is significant, but you only get it when you request it. When connected to a TOPS-20 system, if you use 'SET HOST' to reach another host via DECNET, any parity that DECNET sends gets passed through the Telnet server to you. I am still interested in more details re: the Unix 'getty', as it seems to be the major offender among servers. Which Unices? jbvb@ai.ai.mit.edu Jammes B. VanBokkelen FTP Software Inc..
