[net.internat] multinational character sets/editors/systems

skl@kvvax4.UUCP (S|ren K. Lundsgaard) (02/02/86)

For those of you that are interested in results of a project to build a
system of terminals, printers and software for editing and formatting
of foreign language text I encourage you to get in contact with the
Academic Computer Center of St. Olaf College, in Northfield Minnesota.

They set up a system based on nroff, Nec spinwriters with
multi-national thimbals, and heathkit h29 terminals. The project
involved writing a pre and postprocessor for nroff and writing a text
editor that understood 'escape codes' for foreign characters, and sent
the corresponding 'escape sequence' to the h29 terminals The h29
terminals were modified to translate the 'escape sequence' to the
foreign character on the screen.

The system is in use every day, and it is not uncommon that students
write 10-20 page papers in German or French (among other languages),
with better than letter quality results. I wrote a five page
paper on Niels Henrik Abel in Norwegian using the system, complete
with fifth degree equations. I got an A on the paper and a job
in Norway.
