I received the following mail today, which the author requested be either forwarded to "VW Question Generator" or posted. Since I was unable to forward it, I am posting it. --------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Ladislav Bashtarz, Bell Communications Research, Piscataway, NJ Re: '83 vw rabbit oxygen sensor light reset Reply to: ...ihnp4!pyuxaa!l2b i did not catch the entire sequence re: above. on my '82 which passed away two years ago, all you had to do is reset a switch. it appears that the shop in question was trying the ole ripoff scam with a female. vw cannot afford the headaches to stock and supply so many of these components. beside, the advantage of the modern digital auto comonents is that they have a long life and can be reset if designed properly. auto dealers also often do not know the autos that they service. the insist on putting 4.5 quarts of oil in my saab when the real capacity is 3.7 quarts, for example. (even the owner's book suplied with the car says 4.5 quarts - it was not until i got a haynes manual that the mystery of the exact amount of oil was revealed to me.) the ripoff scenario sounds more plausible in this case, though. 'i please forward to vw question generator (?!schooler@inmet.UUCP) or post.
