[net.auto.tech] Rabbit shifting problem revisited

milos@inmet.UUCP (10/17/85)

About a year ago, there was a discussion about gear-shifting problems
in VW Rabbits; as I recall it, the remedy was pretty simple.

Does anybody out there have the exact details?

My specific problem: it is nearly impossible to find 1st gear easily.
I am just as likely to wind up in 3rd gear as in 1st.

Problem: the gentleperson has a problem shifting into first.

A friend's '83 GTI that I used to drive also had a similar problem -
finding first gear was a real problem! Fortunately, if you shift
into second first, you get it.

My '72 850 spider used to have a similar problem - if you didn't
shift into second first, when you let the clutch out it would pop
out of first and you'd be rolling backwards down the hill (oops)...
