[net.auto.tech] Noise while turning left

ssm@leg.ri.cmu.edu (Sesh Murthy) (11/03/85)

I have a 1980 VW dasher(diesel if that matters) that makes a lot of noise when
I bear left on a curve (even if the curvature is very low) but makes much
less noise when I go straight or turn right. THis is noticeable only at
speeds above 30 mph. The car has 87000 miles on it.

ANy suggestions about possible causes and solutions would be appreciated.

For what it's worth, I had a similar problem on my 74 Mustang II. I experienced
noise on turns, nobody seemed to be able to figure it out until the car was
put up on a rack. It turns out the bozos who had replaced the starter (a FORD
dealer, of course) had failed to use washers (lock washers???) and two of the
three bolts were missing, with the third loose. The starter was flapping
around, and when starting, didn't always engage, just made a clattering
noise, as well as the noise when turning. This may not be the cause of
your problem, but it's worth a check.

In article <242@leg.ri.cmu.edu> you write:

It is one of your front wheel bearings. This happened to my wife's Audi Fox
at about 95,000 miles. Get it fixed without delay!
