The time has probably come to replace the original equipment battery on my VW Rabbit. I am very impressed with the longevity of the original equipment battery, which has been in the car 6-1/2 years, 110K miles, and several severe discharges. It's also the old-fashioned kind that you can check and add water to if it needs it. It's still not quite dead, but may not make it through another spell of -25 degree days. I have never had a battery come close to this in longevity, and wonder if VW (or whoever makes it for them) really does have superior technology, or if I was just lucky. The batter is an odd size anyway, and I haven't seen any bargains on it recently, and I am considering paying the premium to get another VW battery from a dealer. Does anyone out there in net-land have any opinions on VW batteries I should consider? -- Warren Montgomery, ihesa!warren

While Bosch make good batteries, they are expensive, and they are a pain to replace, or get credit on, if you get a bum one (which I have.) On the other hand I have never, ever, ever been unhappy with a Sear DieHard....and if you wait a week, it'll probably be on sale!. -- Jack Saltiel Cambridge Digital Systems {wjh12,talcott}!cdstar!saltiel "Here's to plain speaking and clear understanding." I just bought an official VW (Bosch I believe) battery for my bunny. It was same price as Firestone was offering for their best battery on sale that week. After 3 Diehard's in my old car I would never buy another one again..... The first one lasted 1 week, the replacement lasted 11 months, and it's replacement lasted 15 months... I like the way the Bosch batteries recess the terminal posts so that the battery fumes and any spilled electrolyte does not lead to corrosion. Three years with still shiny and clean posts seems to me that they did something right. Also both OEM batteries lasted 3 years in my diesel which needs a good strong battery for northern winters...
