This only seems to happen at speed, and only after the engine is heavily
loaded for about 5 seconds (I can usually get through the first 2-3 gears
flat out without this happening.)

The car is 4 cylinder, turbocharged, throttle body fuel injection,
electronic ignition (I think), 30,000 miles and 1.5 yrs old, if this helps.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be going on here?  Any hints
would be greatly appreciated, as my car dealer is 30 miles away, expensive,
and the mechanics blew the turbocharger while "test driving" the car the
last time I brought it in for service!

Your car is "running out of gas", not in the gas tank but in the carb or
injection system.  The reason it is running out of gas is usually a cheap
fix; replace the fuel filter.  
   If that doesn't do the trick then look to fuel pump or a blockage in
the fuel line or in the float bowl but 90% of the time its the filter.

I had a problem like this with a normally aspirated engine.  The
filter allowed enough fuel to cruise but as soon as I tried to pass,
the engine almost died.

To seperate a fuel problem from an ignition problem, grab a portable
radio (AM or SW) and do whatever you have to do to pick up true
ignition noise from your engine.  If the radio gets quiet when your
engine balks, then you have an electrical problem.

I just remembered that you have a turbocharger.  My turbo volvo has an
overpressure cutout that kills the ignition system if the normal
wastegate system fails and the manifold pressure hits 12psi.  If your
car has similar protection, you might suspect it.  The overpressure
switch could be monitored with an voltmeter.

I saw this happen to a friends AUDI. The problem turned out to be a
defective overboost detector on the turbo charger. When the gauge read
about 1 and 1/2 bars the overboost detector would shut the car down for
a second or so. You might want to check this and also your waste gate to
make sure that it is functioning properly. I hope this helps.

Some time ago I had a similar problem with a 71 chevy van (350 V8 engine).
The engine would cut out briefly under heavy loads and then recover.
No one could figure out what the trouble was, and the problem persisted
for several years, generally showing up on vacation when we were pulling
a heavy load.
It turned out that the symptom was due to vapor lock in the fuel
line caused by high temperature around the engine which was in
turn caused by lack of adequate air circulation due to a
partially failed fan clutch.
I don't know if this can happen with fuel injection, but you
might check the cooling system to make sure that everything
is working as it should.
