[net.auto.tech] To Weberize my MGB or not to Weberize. That is the question.

delbene@mhuxo.UUCP (DELBENE) (12/09/85)

I think I've finally had it! I spent 8+ hours this weekend tuning
and retuning the dual SU HS-4 carbs on my '79 MGB and still am not
satisfied. I think I've got the tune up procedure down, as I've
been doing it for several years (and several MGs) now.
I'm relatively certain that I've got excess clearence at the
throttle bushings, causing a variable air leak, and hence a variable
mixture. My past experiences with having these carbs rebushed
have been less than favorable, since the operation requires a level
of precision difficult to come by in most machine shops. In addition,
I have the old technology straight needles, which are a pain in the
posterior to center in the jet. As a result, I think I
want new carbs. Hence, my question: Anyone have any thoughts on
swapping out my SUs for a 32/36 progressive downdraft Weber
rather than purchasing two new SUs? The cost of the Weber with manifold
via Moss Motors is $250, versus approx. $130 for two SUs, direct from
the U.K. As I see it, the extra $120 is buying me 10-20 years of
technological improvement, but not being experienced in Webers, I'm
not sure what that is. As my MGB is intended to run a single (and
completely inadequate) Stromberg Zenith carb rather than the dual SUs,
I'm also hoping the Weber will be more adjustable to my
partially detoxed engine (The cam hasn't been changed at all).

Any thoughts on the subject are most appreciated.
