[net.auto.tech] Internal "steam clean"

I would be extremely careful about pouring liquids down carburetor throats.
Any liquid (not yet vaporized) that gets into the cylinder will raise the
pressure above normal during the compression stroke (because liquid is not
compressible). If enough water or whatever gets in, there will be hydrostatic
lock. At 3000 r.p.m. that's certain to break the connecting rod.

It is fairly common practice to prepare an engine for storage by pouring
oil through the carburetor while the engine is running. Oil is far more
viscous than water and hence can't flow into the combustion chamber at a
great rate. But even this procedure must be undertaken carefully. I would
think the potential for an accident with water is greater.

B.T.W. I can't really figure out why the steam would dislodge the carbon
buildup: chemically the carbon is very inert. What is the mechanism?
Mechanical shock?

I saw this used on a PBS show called the 'Saturday mechanic' or something
like that, only they cautioned against pouring water in the engine. They
recommended using an old Windex bottle or something to that effect. They
explained that the water vapor creates a 'thermal shock' that can cause
carbon to dislodge. They recommended running for a few miles after
the treatment and then changing the plugs, as they will probably get
fouled if the treatment worked. This is probably what makes the trick of
trickleing STP GAS treatment down the carb at fast idle work.

ps. 55, it's not even a good idea, it S*CKS!

pss. All the new 86 Chryslers have a 125MPH speedo in their brochures
except the OMNI/Charger series! For those, they are available at extra
cost. 55, an idea whose time has passed.

First off, there WAS a law limiting the speedo top 85, chalk it up to
Carter. The 1980 CBX motorcycle, one of the hottest things to FLY down
the highway had a speedo it could peg in 2nd gear because of this
assinine law. Ford got around this on the one Mustang GT by putting in
a 125 or so MPH speedo but they only labeled it to 85, you could buy
aftermarket stickers for the face, or just ignore it and read the ticks.

The law went off the books about 1981 (I think!) but it's taken till now
for the fast speedos to show up on cars again. The '85 corvette
had a +85 speedo. I remember the first year of the Honda V65 had a
85 but I don't know when they changed up. (My 78 CBX has a 155 mph
unit, but I don't think it will peg it, 145 seems to be the top)

My 85 Dodge GLH turbo can go in excess of 125 (I can testify to this
fact!) I have been told that top speed in the GLH turbo is 142 and
the Shelby turbo tops at 146. BTW, I sustained that 125 speed for over
8 minutes before dropping back below 100.
