[net.auto.tech] Need Advice About VW Jetta

cbd@ihu1n.UUCP (Deitrick) (12/31/85)

Once upon a time, I had the misfortune to own a 1980 VW Rabbit, a notorious
lemon. After 2 years, 24000 miles, and $700 in repairs to the $%#* thing, I
dumped it in favor of a 1982 Nissan Stanza. The Stanza is now starting to show
it's age and mileage (60000) and I'm thinking about getting a new car in the
spring.

I mentioned this to the mechanic who works on my car and he recommended that
I consider a VW Jetta. I found that recommendation strange coming from
someone who knows all about the problems I had with the Rabbit, and accused
him of sniffing gasoline. He's an excellent mechanic and now I think maybe
I should at least consider a Jetta. Does anyone out there have any experience
with them? Has anyone owned one? How well are they put together? What kind
of quality can one expect in a Jetta? What's their repair record? Any random
comments about them? Please reply to the address below. Thanks in advance.

I have an `85 Jetta Turbo-diesel. It is an excellent automobile.
I find it comfortable, quiet (yup, with the stereo and air conditioning
on), handles well, and is suprisingly quick. I bought it for the
fuel economy (40+ mpg) and it has even exceeded my expectations.

In short, I am really sold on this car. Admittedly, there may be people
who have had problems with their Jettas and they will probably E-mail
them to you, but I say take a look and try one out. I don't think
you be disappointed.

Note: I do not work for Volkswagen, nor any of the ad agencies, etc.

Diesels are fine if you live in Texas but if you live in Illinois
where it gets pretty cold in the winter, I've heard, they are a
  real PAIN!
