[net.auto.tech] Benz Diesel Question

acy@abic.UUCP (Adnan Yaqub) (01/10/86)

A friend of mine (these things always happen to friends)
had a Mercedes Benz 1968 220D Diesel. When he got it in 1982 it
was buring a quart of oil every 50 miles. He had the engine
rebuilt, thinking that that would buy him another 1000,000 trouble
free miles. The rebuilding of the engine was done by a non-dealer.
It took the guy a year to do it, and when he finished it the first
time and started it, something (I don't remember what.) was too tight.
This wrecked the engine and he had to rebuild it again. (He paid for
the second time.)
Well, about a year and a half ago two of the three bearing
towers that hold the cam shaft busted. Me friend (Lets call him Tom
because that's his name.) put in new towers and a new cam shaft.
Everything seem to be fine until this past Christmas when the car's
engine "blew up". When it was taken apart, it was found that the
two bearing towers were broken again, the cam shaft was snapped in
two, and the timing chain was broken.
The reason I am posting this is because he (and I) would
like to know what happened. Did he blow it when he put in the
new cam shaft? Did the mechanic blow it who rebuilt the engine?
I have heard that some Mercedes from the late 60's had problems
because of inferior parts imported from East Germany. Could this
be a factor?
We would appreciate your opinions on this, but I must tell
you that the problem is no longer one. The garage where Tom had
his car towed to burned to the ground, melting the car. But that
is another story.

Thanks,
