Are there any distributor experts out there? I'am having problems diagnosing an advance problem. I will mention that the engine resides in a boat, but all in all it's basically a normal Volvo B20 engine. The engine develops a ping at 3700+ RPM; I can't decearn any ping on sudden acceleration or any below this RPM. It's possible that running regular gas may be affecting this, but I've never ran accross a ping which didn't occur during acceleration. I tried retarding the timing as far as possible without any luck. This has lead me to believe that the pinging will only be rectified by changing the advance springs in the distributor. If I'am right in this assumption, would I use stiffer springs -or would this not cap the advance curve? Some specifics: Engine: 1975 Volvo Penta 130 (alias B20?) with dual solex carbs -recent rebuild. Distributor: Bosch (JF4) mechanical advance, points. Thanks for any info! That which has been expressed by myself is merely a group of words which have already been used, but in a different order! {uw-beaver,decvax!microsof,ucbvax!lbl-csam,allegra,ssc-vax}!fluke!mdn Mark Nagel; John Fluke Mfg.
