[net.auto.tech] An unexplained screech

christensen@apollo.uucp (Wendy Christensen) (01/03/86)

My '66 Chevy Malibu makes a weird, whining, screechy sound when I put on the
brakes while backing up. Sometimes it is much louder than other times, but I
can discern no particular pattern. It makes a similar, but not identical,
screech (more like a loud, annoyed, chirp) when I turn the steering wheel
all the way in either direction. The brakes seem to work fine (I got the
fronts replaced 2 months ago). The car runs just fine; the screech seems to
be harmless, if annoying. Could it be symptomatic of something I should be
worried about? (BTW, the car has about 79000 miles on it.)

I had a '69 Camaro which made a screechy sound when backing up and applying
the brakes. I was told that the brakes where self adjusting and that was
the sounds of them adjusting themselves.

Do you have power steering? If so, this could be the source of your noise
when you turn the steering all the way right, or left. I've experienced it
with my cars and contribute it to either a safety by-pass valve opening up
at limit, or to a slipping belt to the power steering pump that slips
because there is more torque on the pump when the steering wheel is at its
limit.

Are you sure your filbert flange is meshing with your grapple grommet?
There is a plant here in Canada which make 23000 a day.
Obviously there will be a few which don't mesh.

Obviously, it's the framstad on the hootska valve, not the flibert
flange which incidentally isn't supposed to mesh with the grapple
grommet on a '66 Chevy Malibu. (or the '68 AMC Pacer) ;+]
