[net.auto.tech] Gas Milage in winter

djl@fisher.UUCP (Dan Levin) (01/19/86)

NB: I am helpless when it comes to new (ie. "smart") cars.

If you are not tuning up your car come winter time, your mixture may
be the problem. Note that mixture is dependent on the O2 content,
ie. density of the air. Thus, usually, cooler air is better for
more power, since you get more O2 per charge. However, the
density change from say 80 degrees in the summer to 20 degrees
in the winter is more than enough to mess up your mixture quite
a bit.

This principle goes for altitude as well. If you really want your car
in tune, you should reset your mixture (using your favorite technique)
any time your running conditions change by more than ~2000 feet or
~20 degrees.
