[net.auto.tech] Screeching tires

What makes the screeching noise if you go around a corner too fast? Is
it the tires vibrating in some strange way or some other part of the
wheel? Also what can be done to make this stop? New tires or new wheels
or both? Thanks.

About 10 years ago, I had problems with tires squeeling around corners,
and soon discovered that my fronts were wearing out because of bad
front end alignment. A good alignment ( I also needed new tires) solved
the problem. Since then I have been very sensitive to 'round the corner
sqeeling.' If there is any chance that alignment is your problem, don't
neglect it; it can be costly.

Much depends on what you mean by "too fast", what kind of car you're
driving, etc. There's no one simple answer.

I have a Honda Accord which on its original Bridgestone tires would
squeal and screech mercilessly when accelerating in (especially) right
turns. The combination of the front wheel drive characteristics of that
car coupled with the particular tires caused them to lose traction easily,
even at *low* speeds in "torque-y" turning maneuvers. I now have a new set of
Pirelli P-4s on the car and haven't heard a peep since.
