[net.auto.tech] Performance increase for 83 VW GTI

*** REPLACE THIS aspiration WITH YOUR turbocharger ***

Has any of you VW GTI owners out there come up with engine / suspention /
etc. modifications that increase performance.

I have literature from Callaway turbo systems and It looks OK but a tad
'spensive. ($3K for the full turbo).

How about 3-piece wheels, better tires than stock Pirellis, better
air damming.

Thanks

My 83 Rabbit GTI has 52k miles on it and come spring I'll be looking to do a
few things to it. First I'll adjust the valves, I checked them at 45k but
they were all within limits. If I decide I want a little more power I'll
remove the head and do some minor work on it. Like matching the ports,
opening them up and polishing. This will improve the flow and bump the power
up a bit. A good aftermarket header and exhaust system will get you some more
poser also. I lightened the flywheel on my other Rabbit, cut the weight from
14 to 8.5 lbs, it's not the easiest thing to drive on the street, but once the
revs come up, it flys!

The car also needs a better spoiler, my '78 diesel with a Kamei held the road
better at 75+ than my GTI. I don't see much use for the rear spoiler, it's
the front end that gets loose, not the back. Maybe, if you have a real deep
front spoiler, you might find you need one out back.

3 piece wheels aren't going to do you any good, larger or wider wheels may,
depending on what you want to do with the car. 15 inch wheels (with 50 series
tires) will give you quicker cornering response, but a rougher ride. I use my
car for street driving, solo I and II and TSD rallying (lots of dirt roads).
So far the car is completely stock. I'm on my third set of summer tires, but
have always used 185/60-14's.

I'd be a little concerned about installing a turbo on a 3 year old engine
without a major rebuild, maybe the minor modifications will produce enough
extra power to satisfy you. You should also look into general tune up parts
like new plug wires, a hotter coil, new plugs and all that.
