Also, consider the snow on the road.  If you do not think it is a factor,
try riding a bicycle in 4" of fresh snow (so that there is no ice, etc
to complicate things).  That is hard work, and bike tires, being skinny,
cut through the snow more easily than do car tires.  Also, I keep records of
gas consumption in my cars.  I got 32 mpg from Lake Placid, NY back to
Middletown, NJ in a heavy snow the last time I did the trip.  In good weather
it is about 36 mpg, driven faster.
