[net.auto.tech] High pitched squeal in Ford electronic radios

marauder@fluke.UUCP (Bill Landsborough) (02/13/86)

After taking my 1985 Ford F-150 pickup in for a high pitched squeal
coming from their top of the line radio for the fifth time they
finally were able to eliminate the problem by special modifications to
the internal circuit of the radio. The squeal was constant as long as
the radio power switch was on. Tape or radio, AM or FM, engine
running or not, it would squeal. It was a very high frequency just at
the point of human ability to hear it. But it drove us crazy once we
realized that it was there.

The cause was the green phosphorus display was emmitting the noise and
it was being amplified through the audio circuit to the speakers.

If you have this problem and never found out what the cause was, this
might be it.
