[net.auto.tech] Jetta brakes in the wet

rosberg@ihuxi.UUCP (Rosberg) (03/03/86)

For all those I didn't thank personally(re: jetta radio
installation), it's in, sounds pretty good (the stock speakers
sure are bass-shy)...thanks alot.

The next question for all you wolfsburg commandos is...

how come the brakes (1986 Jetta GLI) are so sensitive to
moisture? After 5 or 6 miles in a moderate rain, speed ~60 to 85,
I have to ride the brake pedal for about 5 seconds to get much
stopping power. At 80 per, you cover alot of ground in 5 seconds,
and it makes me nervous.

I know that there will be some effect on any brake system if it's
exposed to water, but these are the worst brake I ever seen in 20 years
of driving cars and riding bikes. Once dried off, they work like gang busters,
but that will be no help when I'm prying myself out of the back of
the commuter van (they all act like spawning fish on the Chicago area
tollways...mayhap there's a stupidity test needed to drive one...50 per
in the left lane, with two miles of cars backed up behind them)...

anyway, thatnks in advance for your help, and for your patience.

I drive an end-of-the-model-year 1985 Jetta GLI and have never experienced
the problem you described above. I don't know what the differences are
between the '85 and '86 model brakes but if I were experiencing that problem
I'd have it checked before I drove in the rain again!!
