[net.auto.tech] J. C. Whitney

wmartin@brl-smoke.ARPA (Will Martin ) (03/20/86)

I've recently seen some references in this group to getting items
from the J. C> Whitney catalog. As I recall, this company went through
some bad times a while back (maybe a bankruptcy & reorganization?), and
people ordering from it during that period had problems.

Anyone have comments as to how reliable the firm is now, and any
comparisons between today's comapny and that of the past?

I lost about $15 during the bankruptcy period due to problems not worth
going in to. But they seem to be as reliable as ever recently. They
still sell a lot of shoddy gimmicks, but sometimes they are the only source
for certain items.

I buy things from them all of the time. They are slow on some items
but very thorough, and always deliver. They do a good job of notifying
you of delays or backorders. Their products are not name brand stuff
but seem to be OK. (I have ordered overload springs, shocks, trailer
hitches, etc. from them.)
