Geographic Information Systems Researcher

Research on core technologies for the next generation of Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) is a key part of our mission.  This position
is an exciting opportunity to make a significant contribution to GIS
technology as a key member of an internationally-recognised team.

The Objective:  To develop innovative solutions to difficult problems
of crucial importance to GIS by exploiting recent advances in spatial
database, user interfaces, object-oriented data management, artificial
intelligence and visualisation.

Your Role:  You will be leader of a small research team on such issues
as directories, integration of raster, attribute, textual and pictorial
data, and query optimisation within an integrated GIS.  You will be
responsible for identifying research topics and conceiving and
implementing solutions.

A PhD in a relevant area is required.  A background in Information
Technology and a capacity to interact with industry, with leading-edge
users and with prestigious international research groups are highly
desirable.  Experience in Spatial Information Systems would be an
advantage.

You will be based in the Centre for Spatial Information Systems on the
campus of the Australian National University, Canberra.  Interstate and
overseas travel will be required from time to time.

***** SELECTION CRITERIA *****

Pre-requisite:

1.  Ph.D or equivalent qualification or experience in a relevant
discipline.


Essential:

1.  Experience in one or more of the following areas: database
management systems, knowledge-based systems, Human-Computer
Interaction, object-oriented design,  object-oriented programming
systems, query optimisation, spatial analysis.

2.  Evidence of successful research record, and of successful
initiatives in research and development.

3.  Demonstrated experience in software development, preferably in a
team environment.

4.  Familiarity of, and preferably experience in, software engineering
practices.

5.  Demonstrated proficiency with programming on UNIX-based graphics
workstations.

6.  Demonstrated ability to communicate well, and interact at a
technical level, with professional colleagues and collaborators,
including a commitment to to Equsl Employment Opportunity and
Industrial Participation policies.


Desirable:

1.  Project leadership experience.

2.  Experience with database, object-oriented systems and query
optimisation.

3.  Demonstrated experience in Spatial Information Systems.

4.  Experience with commercial development of research.

5. Evidence of innovative approaches to research, development and
commercialisation.

SUPERVISOR: DR DAVID ABEL

1.  Participate as a member, and possibly leader, of a small team
designing and prototyping specific Geographic Information Systems.

2.  Interact with other research groups, industry and other
collaborators on the requirements and applications of Geographic
Information Systems.

3.  Participate in the research, development and liaison activities of
the Centre.
