[net.games.chess] Accord Reached on KK rematch

trb@haddock.UUCP (01/31/86)

According to the NYTimes 1/30 in an item datelined Lucerne 1/29, FIDE,
Kasparov, Karpov and the Soviet Chess Federation have agreed on a
rematch which is to start some time between July 28 and August 4.
London has bid $900K, Leningrad has bid $500K. Florencio Campomanes
(FIDE President) prefers London, but no decision has yet been made.
The match was originally scheduled to start in February, but Kasparov
claimed that this did not give him enough rest after the 72 games that
he and Karpov have played in the past year and a half.

[My personal opinion is that if Kasparov had agreed to play the match
now, Karpov would have killed himself in the ensuing struggle, as he
has responded very poorly to the strain up to this point. -trb]
