[net.micro.amiga] alternative Amiga expansion units

biggers@topaz.RUTGERS.EDU (Mark Biggers) (10/31/85)

I called up Tecmar just the other day to inquire about prices and
availability of their expansion box and 20 meg hard disk unit.

Using the Amiga when compiling sort of reminds me of using
a Sage IV running Idris with floppy disks and a small memory - the
edit/compile/run/debug cycle is pretty slow, esp. with that Alink
linker. So added extra memory above the 512k supplied with the machine
could be used as a RAM disk, even without the storage/speed benefits
of a hard disk.

Well,
~$1000 for each of the expansion unit and Hard disk.
Both available at the end of November from dealers.

I dunno about these prices. I admit that the expansion unit comes
loaded (1mb memory, serial, SCSI, battery-backed clock) but why can't
Tecmar allow you at least to upgrade the box in stages? Reminds me
of the high prices charged for IBM PC expansion cards in the early days,
when a few companies' cards were the only game in town. I *really* only
need the memory, and would just as soon purchase and plug in the chips
myself.

How about it, hardware hackers? A S-100 interface card would be OK,
or some such. Does anyone know of any other alternative expansion
boxes/interfaces planned?

thanks, mark (Y.A.A.D)
