Why did Commodore pull out of the show at the last minute? They were in the exhibits guide (stand M1032 at the MGM Hotel), but the space was occupied by other exhibitors. Atari, on the other hand, was VERY present, showing many colour applications for the 520ST, and (cheeky) had an Amiga, a Mac, and a 520 side by side, all running versions of the (in)famous "Bouncing Ball Demo". Undoubtably, the 520 LOOKED best, and was running at the same speed as the Amiga, however no sound being demo'ed from any of them, and the Amiga was the only one which had the horizontal portion of the background grid displayed. I have a feeling that this might have been ommitted on the 520 version for a (? performance) reason. Good marketing anyhow, as was the separate stand paid for by Atari but full of small independant software developers for the 520. Is Commodore in so much trouble that they cannot afford to market their products at one of the most important computer showcases?? Ray Dunn. ...philabs!micomvax!othervax!ray

It has been stated (bear in mind, Commodore has not commented on this), that they were, uh, "prevented" from attending by one or more of their creditors due to having (allegedly) defaulted on some of their debt(s). Seems 'tis the bean-counters of the world, and their ilk, that ultimately decide the fate of a new product in the Marketplace ... welcome to "The Real World"! It is also reported that they *were* there privately. (I just *love* how the Underground works!) And it's been said that they won't be exhibiting at CES either for the same reason ... at least not "officially". CYA time: The above statements may or may not be true. In either case, they are my opinions, and not those of my employer, roommate, or mouse. /kim *** REPLACE THIS LINE WITH YOUR MESSAGE *** -- UUCP: {decvax,ucbvax,ihnp4}!decwrl!mips!kim DDD: 415-960-1200 USPS: MIPS Computer Systems Inc, 1330 Charleston Rd, Mt View, CA 94043

Commodore was also in the exhibitor guide (Booth B4) at the Canadian Computer Show in Toronto (Nov 18-21). However the only thing in their spot was a bunch of chairs. Very nice of Commodore to give tired feet a place to rest :-). On the other hand Atari was VERY prominent at this show. -- Ron Janzen Ontario Science Centre, Toronto ...!{allegra,ihnp4,linus,decvax}!utzoo!oscvax!ron

The summary says it all. Commodore has rarely spent money to be at a show. At least that's true according to "The Microcomputer Wars". -- -"Daphnia Dave" Fetrow { ihnp4, fluke, tektronix, uw-june }!uw-beaver!entropy!fetrow :UUCP entropy!fetrow@uw-june.arpa :ARPA
