[net.micro.amiga] Emacs, Radar Raiders, JAUG, Phone Mate etc...

Hi,

I've seen some interesting things for the Amiga lately, first of
which is MicroEMACS V0.8 !!! Yep, with Intuition menus and all -
no mlisp extensibility, and I don't know if they plan on adding it.
The executable was a little over 40K large. There are multiple
windows and buffers, and it's nice and fast. You can execute AmigaDOS
commands without leaving Emacs (though another CLI window does the
same thing), and there are keyboard macros. I'm not sure who did
this one - doesn't Uniplus make MicroEMACS?

I've also seen an early copy of Radar Raiders (Bruce Artwick's
flight simulator). The animation is the smoothest I've seen on any
PC flight simulator. There is not much scenery on the early demo
(circa August), but there are some nice pyramids - they're shaded
(in color) and are solid objects with hidden surfaces removed. The
sound is pretty nice too - sounds like they digitized a real jet
(wild when you crank it up on your stereo - think of what it will do
to the neighbors!). I've also seen Musicraft V0.8 (from August
too(?)). The instruments are great - over two screen fulls of dual
column directory listings of digitized and synthesized instruments.
You can only get four voices out at once as far as I can tell - and
you can't do all the fancy musical notation such as bars and ties
like Deluxe Music Construction Set can, but it's great for a
beginner. You can learn lots about waveforms, instruments, sound and
basic musical notation.

The Phone Mate will be seeing first plastic soon - apparently some
Japanese firm is slowing things down. The modem should be all ready
to go soon - don't expect the phone mate till February. For those of
you in the New Jersey area, or who will be in the New Jersey area
later this month - don't forget the first meeting of the JAUG
(Jersey Amiga Users Group) on Friday, Dec 20th at 7:30 P.M. in room
114 at Hill Center, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ. If you
need directions, send me mail. We hope to have Commodore at the
meeting - a local computer dealer will be present and will be
offering discounts for Amigas bought or ordered at the meeting. You
can also try giving me a call at (201) 745-2839.

UniPlus+ is the trademark for our implementation of Unix System V with
BSD enhancements. But no, UniSoft does not currently support any
emacs versions, although I did do one of the first System V ports
of GNU emacs. Maybe you are thinking of Unipress Software.

Sure wish I had a REAL editor on my amiga. Now that I have had some
time to take a look at my ROM kernel manual, it looks like the AMIGA
could run GNU emacs with a little work. The biggest problem currently
is that GNU emacs needs a minimum of about 1Mb to really do anything
useful. Still, when the memory expansion box becomes available, maybe
I'll tackle it. Anyone want to loan me one...

Microemacs is NOT made by Unipress. I know, as I am acquainted with the person
doing the port. He just got started, so don't expect anything yet.
