[net.micro.amiga] terminals

rivero@kovacs.UUCP (Michael Foster Rivero) (11/24/85)

If any Amiga users are looking for a good terminal emulator at a
reasonable price, I just bought the Maxicomm package from Maxicorp
at 2817 Sloat Road, Pebble Beach Calif. 93953.

I am very happy with it (This message is coming to you via the
Amiga/Maxicomm package), and can say that it is worth the $49.00
      price tag.

The terminal emulates an ansi standard terminal similar to a
vt100, but with 78 columns instead of 80.

I am still hammering out a UNIX termcap entry for it and will
post to the net when the bugs are out.

Neither was the review encouraged or paid for in any way my Maxicorp.

I bought it too - and while it seems to work as a terminal I have
been unable to get the xmodem part to work properly when talking
to a terminal program on my PC. When I send from the PC it just
times out with an error message. Something similar happens when
I send from the Amiga.

Even worse was when I tried to transmit a text file and IT JUST KEPT
ON GOING AND GOING FOR EVER sending blank data after the file had
finished.

Has any one else tried Maxicomm out ?.

Don't know if this will help or not, but there is *supposed* to be a new
Rev of Maxicomm out (1.02, I think). If you're running 1.00, you might
want to call Maxicorp, as I *believe* the upgrade is free.

Recently a couple of people have mentioned a terminal emulator called
MaxiComm, ($49, available from MaxiCorp, 2817 Sloat Road, Pebble Beach,
Calif., 93953, if your Amiga dealer doesn't have it).

I've been using MaxiComm for 4 days now, and find it quite acceptable.
It's certainly not heavy on features, but it does seem to be solid enough
for serious use. I was able to get the xmodem to work downloading from a
local BBS. I do have a couple of minor gripes. It would be nice to be
able to store a list of numbers/systems to be called, rather than
revising a single slot each time the destination changes. I also had some
trouble with the parity settings. To get EVEN parity, I actually had to
select ODD from the menu.

The VT100 emulation is weak. I haven't had much luck getting vi to work
well, and I got myself stuck in KED before I realized I had no function keys.

Several other terminal emulators seem to be (almost) ready for the
well-primed market. Has anybody tried any of these yet? How're those
Kermit projects coming along, folks?

Just got my new AmigaWorld today - cover story is "Andy Warhol: An
Artist and His Amiga." It also has a list of Amiga's regional reps, and
lots of new ads. It's nice to see such a rapid response to the Amiga
Software Open.

A question about opening a CLI using the icon:
Has anyone tried starting a CLI this way, only to have the CLI window
open very briefly, and then close on its own? One guess might be that,
when a CLI is open, any new CLI's have to fired up using the NEWCLI
command, rather than using the icon. I'm not sure I'd claim that
as *my* guess, though. I can't find any error indicator.
 Anybody got a better guess?

I've been avidly reading this group since its inception. Glad I'm
finally able to contribute.

I saw on CompuServe that Rev. 1.03 of "maxicomm" is out now ...

BTW, there is now a "real" Amiga SIG on CompuServe. One of the Sysops
is none other than Bela Lubkin, who until recently was the Borland SIG's
Sysop. Bela has said that he left Borland to do "something" on his
own ... then shows up on a dedicated Amiga forum ... hmmmm? Just type
"go pcs-61" to get there (I *think* "go amigaf" works too). The amount
of "traffic" there is *very* high, and the Data Libraries are starting
to get some contributions.

There are two other SIG's on CIS of Amiga interest:

o the CBM sponsored SIG ("go pcs-44"), which has no Data
Libraries due to some sort of disagreement problem between
	   CBM and CIS

o the Canadian user's group (I forget their actual name ... sorry)
at "go pcs-155"; they have a Data Lib in the graphics/music
	   sub-section, I believe
