From: DICKSON, JEFF S. <jdickson@jpl-milvax.arpa> While browsing through my latest PC-World magazine (Jan '86 edition), I ran accross an add by Pelican Software Systems advertising UCSD Pascal for the Amiga for $79.95. I called them up and they said the compiler package will be available in about two to three weeks. My phone connection with them was lousy so forgive me if some of the following information is incorrect. For $79.95 you get: o a text editor o a filer o a native language compiler o true graphics o the pascal compiler (of course!) o a library manager o a print utility o a file transfer utility (whoops! Change "native language compiler" to "native code generator") I know nothing of this company's product line with regards to product support, customer support, adequacy of documentation, compiler efficiency, etc. As such, I am in no position to make any comments about it. However, if anyone out there has had any previous experiences with their other products-- please post them to the net. If you want more information, I suggest you call them. Their number is: (718) 851 - 3100. Tell them what you want up front, less they will ask you for a license number. Moving right along............ As many of you are aware, Aztec C will be available for the Amiga ( through Manx Software Systems ) by the end of January. It will cost the same as their other compilers such as the MAC. For those of you who haven't purchased Lattice C compilers yet and are not the least bit impressed by present owners views of it, I suggest you wait. I have used the both the MSDOS and CP/M86 versions extensively and have no complaints whatsoever. Their compilers are fast and produce efficient code. Byte Magazine sometime in the past year (sorry I can't remember the month) published an article reviewing different C compilers for the MAC. Out of seven or so compilers, Aztec's compiler was rated as one of the best. I'll dig it up so I can be more informative. Based on my own experiences though and their apparently good track record for producing decent compilers, assemblers, and linkers -- I believe they are the way to go if you are really serious about writing good, fast C code. Then again I know a month from now is a long time - especially if you (like me) are developing software for the Amiga. But then again....haste can make waste! In no way am I affiliated with any of the above companies except as a former (satisfied) customer of the latter. No information presented here was intended for any other purpose other than to raise the awareness of the people who suscribe to this forum. JDICKSON@JPL-MILVAX.ARPA ------
