[net.micro.amiga] Amiga expansion

crum@utah-cs.UUCP (Gary L. Crum) (01/04/86)

What determines the unit numbers of external disk drives attached to an
Amiga system? Is the drive unit number determined by the drive's position in
the daisy chain, a switch inside the disk drive, or is it not currently
possible to hook up two external 3.5" drives to an Amiga?

A related question: Can AmigaDOS format and access disks in the external
5.25" drive when it is attached to an Amiga, or is that product intended for
use only with the MS-DOS emulator?

Until a good hard disk drive is available for the Amiga, developers could
benefit by having more than two floppies on-line.

The 1st external (3.5") floppy drive is powered from the amiga. The
second and 3rd need their own power supplies. The drives sold by Commodore
to date (again, as far as I know) do not have provisions for externa;l
power supplies. You would have to cobble something up. I belive the
position in the daisy chain determines the drive number.

5.25" drives can (currently, V1.0, V1.1) only be used with the MS-DOS
environment.
