[net.micro.amiga] Using 96tpi 5-1/4 drives on Amiga

randy@bcsaic.UUCP (randy groves) (01/05/86)

Granted the 3-1/2 drives would be better to have. But with 96tpi 5-1/4
drives multiplying like rabbits and diving in price, the thought naturally
occurs - what problems would I encounter? Has anyone else attempted this?

Anciliary questions come to mind:

Does every Amiga external drive require its own controller, or are the
external 3-1/2 and 5-1/4 drives using the internal controller? If so, how
many drives, and of what type, can the controller support?

Are the connection specs available from Commodore, so that this could be
attempted??

At as little as 65-70 dollars for a 96tpi 800M drive, why hasn't anybody
done it yet??

   Yes.
The expansion connector on the Amiga allows you to connect up to three
additional external drives. However, as has been previously mentioned on
the net, Commodore has used a non standard arrangement for motor control.

   I have a circuit that allows two external drives (96tpi 5-1/4,3-1/2 )
to be connected and will post it to the net within the next few days. The
circuit provides a common motor control as well as disk change detection
if your 5-1/4 drive has a 'held ready' option. I am currently using this
arrangement with two Mitsubishi 4853 drives and it seems two work very well.

The circuit is quite simple and will be posted as a 'Net List' of pin
connection's unless someone has a better idea.
