[net.micro.amiga] Following the responces to my OS peeves..

dillon@ucbvax.berkeley.edu.BERKELEY.EDU (Matt Dillon) (01/25/86)

First of all, I would like to Thank Mike Meyer for his
responce to my article. Obviously, we disagree in many
respects... but at least it's a meaningful and beneficial
conversation.

Wayne Hamilton also replied with a rather lengthy posting,
and though it was a bit more into the FLAME department
than Mike's, I would say thank you to him as well.

I don't know who Steve Childress is. Although I can
understand him not liking Apple DOS, MSDOS, or cassette
downloads, I frankly take his comment about myself as
an insult:

>I think most of us agree that Matt's statement is at the
>least far too extreme and unquestionably a valueless,
>reprehensible example of an OPERATING SYSTEM ZEALOT.

It is obvious that by far my most favorite OS at the moment
is UNIX. I'm not hiding that fact. But don't get the idea
that I havent touched other OS's. I'm rather a MSDOS buf,
since I have an XT. I sys-opd an MPM-system (8086/8088
multi-user CPM) for a short while. My first computer was
a cassette based Commodore PET.... I even fooled around
with an HP2001 years back.

So what you've read in my previous two (large) postings, is
my professional opinion of the stability of AmigaDOS.
I made it clear that I thought it was not only very
unstable, but probably wouldn't last (for many years)
without MAJOR modifications. That is my opinion.

Just because my view differ's from somebody elses, doesn't
mean that my view is wrong... or even that their view is
wrong. I prefer discussion to senseless arguing and
slander.

---------

Ok. One other item that occured to me about the Amiga's
OS is that nobody seems to have taken into account the
possible addition of a MMU. To do many things
you are required to delve deep into system structures,
which would clearly be impossible if a MMU were in place.
Even making those segments READ-ONLY to the user process
could cause problems, as sometimes one is required to
write into those structures.

	Comments, anyone?

Question: Does anybody out there have sector-read/write
routines for the disk?? And, possibly, the format for
the kickstart disk? (The intent is to make an auto-boot
for another OS)

				Thanks,

				-Matt

So why did you send me mail containing senseless aruguing and slanderous
remarks concerning my initial (non-offensive, non-nasty) response to your
arguments? While you're on a soapbox preaching tolerance why not take
some notes?

Enough sed!
