From: S7YLF4%IRISHMVS.BITNET@WISCVM.WISC.EDU (Didn't respond separately in CCs since didn't want you to end up with two copies.) 1) To Mike Meyer <mwm%ucbopal@berkeley.EDU>: That doesn't seem to be the problem. Immediately after I set the date, it still does not give me the correct one. My disks are such a mishmash of Workbench 1.0 and 1.1...could it be that I'm using a 1.0 Preferences with a 1.1 Workbench, or vice versa? (I always boot up with the 1.1 Kickstart.) That shouldn't affect the date command, though; and date still doesn't work. This is true of all the disks I've tried it on, so it's not an isolated error. 2) To LMC-TRANS@GUNTER-ADAM.ARPA (sorry, can't remember your name): That's strange, as I've never had to go through such a routine before. You see, I'm saving my documents _as_text_, and re- reading them in, as I am uploading them as messages to a local BBS which uses wordwrap (hence cannot use ed, because it inserts CRs after each line). Now apparently Textcraft defaults its own margins to 5 and 75 or whatever, and I change those to 0 and 80 to fit what they will look like on the BBS...but doesn't give me the extra neat margin anymore. Well, I'll try what you suggested. If it works I will be in your debt. {In case anyone local to Notre Dame heard me throwing things around last night and swearing very loudly, forgive me. It took my roommate awhile to calm me down. 8^)} nj, the Somewhat Annoying <s7ylf4%irishmvs@wiscvm.wisc.EDU>

From: Bernie Cosell <cosell@BBN-PROPHET.ARPA> In fact you are running into a little publicized compatibility problem. It appears that Workbench 1.0 doesn't know how to set the date for Kickstart 1.1. Thus, *NOTHING* you do will result in the date being set if you are trying to run in that configuration. I pushed on it a fair bit and as odd as it seems, this is the *only* odd behavior I was able to uncover. [to see this more clearly, fire up a CLI window and just try "DATE <whenever>" "DATE" and you'll see that the date doesn't `take']. I'm a little surprised that this never got publicized *especially* to the dealer: folks who got their Amigas with 1.0 software discovered that most of the neat new programs (DPAINT was the one I hit) *required* Kickstart 1.1, so dealers happily supplied that. Mostly they did *not* worry much about giving you Workbench 1.1 to go with it (they *would*, but they didn't know that they *should*). In sum, if you have Kickstart 1.1, and don't have Workbench 1.1 to go with it, *go back and get an updated workbench disk!!*. /Bernie Bernie Cosell Internet: cosell@prophet.bbn.com Bolt, Beranek & Newman, Inc USENET: bbncc5!bpc Cambridge, MA 02238 Telco: (617) 497-3503
