Ray (last name and location unknown, sorry, I don't have the original mail) noted that we support some developers with Sun (tm?) Workstations and wanted to know if we could support VAX 4.3BSD. I was unable to respond with mail and thought the info might be of interest... To: pyramid!hplabs!parcvax!unlv.csnet!ray Subject: Re: Amiga Development For VAX 4.3BSD Ray, I don't know much about different Unix environments so I don't know if our stuff would work on other than Suns. The way we distribute SW to Sun developers is on "tar" tapes. Either 3M(tm) tape cartridges (larger than, but the same idea as audio cassettes) and 1" 9-track reels. (-: Like "real computers" have :-) I do not know if we are "accepting" new Sun developers. IF you think that one of the above formats might work for you, AND if you are willing to accept the fact that you will get no support if the stuff doesn't work on your VAX, AND if you think that you can get Sun object code to run on your Vax (because some utility source is not shipped) ... THEN try contacting Dave Street in West Chester (215)431-9100 and see if he is willing to add another "Sun" developer. Sun developers are significantly more work for us to support than native or IBM PC developers. Floppies are copied, in mass, by machines. People have to set up and handle the Sun tapes individually, cost of media is greater,... BTW: My (limited) experience indicates that a standard IBM AT (w/ 20 meg Hard disk) compiles and links at about the same speed as a Sun (getting much of its data over Ethernet). IBM XTs compile and link *much* slower. --BruceB
