[net.micro.amiga] Problems with commodore

dillon@CORY.BERKELEY.EDU (Matt Dillon) (03/04/86)

Well, I don't know about Commodore filing for bankruptcy, but they are
definately having problems with their creditors.

What's the scoop? (If you are not authorized to say anything, tell us
so, but don't give us the 'nothing is wrong' line)

Exactly! This is what these silly disclaimers are all about. A
company's non-executive employees are not in a position to make pronouncements
about that company's health or business practices.

Also, it would be silly to respond to every "the Atari dealer told my
friend Joe that CBM was about to go under" rumor. You can get better and more
timely information by reading the Wall Street Journal's coverage (generally
critical) than from the net.

Anyhow, the last press release posted announced that CBM had reaced
an agreement with their banks for financing through March 1987.

In case you haven't heard, Commodore got its bank loans extended through
March of 1987 (according to Inforworld 3/3/86). This means that we can stop
worrying about Commodore going bye-bye for a while. It has been said many
times before, but with the imminent success of the Amiga PC, the banks would
be stupid to do anything to CBM. If the banks tried, CBM would still be in
business for a long time under chapter 11 (or is it 13?). Clearly the folks
at CBM know a little about what they are doing - they did buy a company called
Amiga a while ago. It is unfortunate that Tramiel left CBM in such a shambles
when he left.
