Sorry to clutter the net with an individual reply, but the mailers barfed it back and I have (not surprisingly) gotten the question more than once. To Al Hall (Xerox osbunorth) et al: RE: Avatex 1200 modem for $99 I ordered my Avatex from California Digital. The company copies of our BYTE subscription mysteriously vanish, and I'm not at home with my copy or with the shipping box, but here's what information I've got on hand: 800-421-5041 California Digital Inc, 17700 Figueroa St, Gardena, CA 90248 213-217-0500 Technical Questions, California Orders, and Customer Service Their ad was towards the back of the April '86 issue of BYTE, (see index of advertisers). They accept VISA and MasterCard, and ship UPS. Delivery was about 11 days to N.J. I posted my first queries about the Avatex to net.micro.amiga, because I first saw it advertised (without brand name) for $109 by Megatronics (of Utah) in AmigaWorld magazine. When I found the ad in Byte later, I decided the range of response should be expanded to net.micro. My last response was to a posting noting the power supply ran on the warm side. I received an earlier response from someone who had used several. He noted the Avatex might be slightly more sensitive to line noise than some others, but not enough to be a problem. I have noticed no noise problems in my use, but my Vax is only 3.6 miles from my home. As noted, your local computer can't tell the modem to hang up, but that is probably not a major problem for most of us. I miss the internal speaker, and it's missing many "Hayes" commands, but it works fine at both 300 and 1200, and it does dial. My sticking power switch sticks much less now. I am happy with mine. Please excuse the commercialism, but I have not been able to respond directly. -- Brent Chivers allegra!princeton!orsvax1!brent or perhaps ORS Automation, Inc seismo!caip!topaz!pyrnj!orsvax1!brent 440 Wall St Phone 609-924-1667 Princeton, NJ 08540 FAX 609-924-2413 USA TELEX 4944924 ORSIN ------------- Disclaimer: Our business is vision, but my views are my own.
