We've had some postings on dance music tapes lately, I thought I would
put in my $.02 worth on my favorite theme tape : Sunshine Music.
This is a collection of songs I like to play in the summer with my
car windows rolled down (no AC so this is most of the time!) while
going someplace I actually want to be (ie not to work), preferably
on Coastal Hiway 17.
I had several goals in putting this tape together, to wit :
1) I wasn't going to buy any new records for it, the songs had
to be ones I already had.
2) I didn't want to let the Beach Boys take over the tape
(I'm a fan, and could easily make several summer tapes of
just BB music)
3) I didn't want Beach Music to take over the tape (this
is quite different from the Beach Boys and west coast
surf rock - if you aren't a Southerner, don't worry
about it)
4) The songs should all have a summer theme (or have a summer
mood - this to me to justify some strange choices) and
be good.
This is the way the current tape turned out (there have been previous
tapes, eaten by my car that were slightly different, as no doubt
the tape made after this one is lunch will be different)
Sunshine Music Jan & Dean
The theme song - possibly by Dean only
Groovin' The Young Rascals
Saturday in the Park Chicago
Probably the best song they ever did
Girl from Ipanema Stan Getz
Summer in the City Lovin' Spoonful
A Summer Song Chad & Jeremy
It's OK The Beach Boys
The ultimate carpe diem song. A real mystery to me why this
wasn't a big hit
Wipe Out The Surfaris
The Surfaris should have stuck to instrumentals, it's strange
hearing them try to do Dylan.
Dancing In the Moonlight King Harvest
She's My Summer Girl Jan & Dean
A forgotten Brian Wilson gem from the Ride the Wild Surf album.
The lyrics wouldn't fly today, but you can tell they aren't
taking the song overseriously anyway (11 wasps and a bumblebee!)
Lazy Day Spanky & Our Gang
Summertime Summertime The Jamies
Black Water Doobie Brothers
Under the Boardwalk The Drifters
Beach music does have its place
Working on a Groovy Thing Fifth Dimension
Not really a summer song, but it has that feeling. A lot
of the 5th's hits still hold up well.
Waterloo Sunset The Kinks
Another strange choice, but it does have a nice laid back sound.
Keepin' the Summer Alive Beach Boys
Best song from the album of the same name. Why they released
two mediocre singles from this album and let this one languish
is beyond me; I think it could have made it.
Summertime Blues Eddy Cochran
Good Day Sunshine Beatles
Hey Baby Bruce Channel
Roll Out Those Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer Nat King Cole
Warm California Sun Ramones
Yes I know this is not the original
59th Street Bridge Song Simon & Garfunkle
The live version (from the S&G GH album). I may put the Harper's
Bizzare version on the next tape just for variety.
Summertime George Gershwin by way of Billy Stewart
I don't know, this one isn't wearing too well; it may
make room for something else next time
Daydream Lovin' Spoonful
Moonlight Feels Right Starbuck
A modern classic from a group that was never heard from again
(no "Everybody be Dancing" doesn't count)
Turn Down Day The Cyrkle
Good song despite the cutsey group name. From the same album as
Red Rubber Ball.
In the Summertime Mungo Jerry
In the Good Old Summertime Bing Crosby
Springtime Mama Henry Gross
A neglected artist, Gross has made two albums I consider classic
(Plug Me Into Something, and Show Me to the Stage) this isn't
from either though. (It's from the album with Shannon).
Sand in My Shoes The Drifters
All Summer Long Beach Boys
A real remember when song.

All this takes a 90 min tape and more than 90 min of patience to get it
all recorded.
Any comments? Have I missed something vital?

PS : don't tell me if I misspelled any titles or artists; I have all the
information, but digging through the record pile takes more time
than I want to spend right now.

You say that Sunshine Music is by Jan & Dean, possibly by Dean only. If it is by Dean only, it might be after Jan's 1966 accident. Dean went on recording by himself for a while after that accident, but it just wasn't the same. (I heard Dean doing "Vegetables", originally on the Beach Boys' "Smiley Smile" LP, on a Jan & Dean anthology LP.)

Ted: Great tape, those are fun to make. One selection I find curious,
unless I'm thinking of a different song, is "Hey Baby" by Bruce Channel.
As I remember that song, it was snowing in Virginia ('62). That's ok, you
can replace it with "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" by the Walker Bros.,
about '64 or '65.

"Hey Baby" is a song with a good beat! (Bruce Channel's version, the original, is a better version than Ringo Starr's.)

First off, I agree with the "Moonlight Feels Right" comments -- that's one of
the great summer songs. Does anybody know what ever became of them? I agree
with "In the Summertime" too.
Secondly, here's a few of my own choices. I apologize if I don't remeber the
artists, but a lot of these songs were out back in the 60's and early 70's.
(Wish I could make a tape of them.)
Cracklin' Rosie -- Neil Diamond
Hitchin' a Ride -- Vanity Fair
Summer Breeze -- Seals and Crofts
(I'm not sure if this came out in the summer.)
also Diamond Girl
Ride Captain Ride -- Blues Image
Lady Willpower -- Gary Puckett and the Union Gap
(Don't know what ever happened to them)
also Young Girl
Grazin' in the Grass -- the other one, not the one by Hugh Makasela
Dance With Me -- Orleans
Afternoon Delight -- Starland Vocal Band
(Does anybody remember their TV show? It was expected that they would be-
come a big success. Unfortunately it didn't happen. There just wasn't
any substance to their group. Even the Great Space Coaster had more sub-
stance than they did.)
It Never Rains in Southern California -- Albert Hammond (I think)
Lazy Days -- Dunno, Spanky and Our Gang, maybe?
Treat Her Like a Lady -- Cornelius Bros. and Sister Rose
also Too Late to Turn Back Now
If I can think of any others, I'll post them.

That's Hugh Masekela you were referring to re: Grazing in the Grass. The vocal version (the only other version I know) was done by the Friends of Distinction(?).
