Yet another 'suggestion'.

Redesign the the board. Get rid of the 64k x 4 chips and use 256k x 1.
In low quantities, the by 1s are significantly cheaper than the by 4s.
(I have no idea what the difference is in quantity.)
512k for the user, 256k for the WCS and 256k the two could fight for!
Not only would there be more memory available, you could lose the plug
in. (Getting that past the FCC must have been fun.)

And while you're at it, you could design the board so it could plug into
the expansion box. Voila! No extra appendage needed. A single slot box
could take the place of the current one for those who didn't need expansion.

Yes, I have an S-100 system and like slots. And yes, I work for a
university and only have to worry about reality on payday. :-)

In the quantities Commodore as a whole has been buying in, at least, there's
little to no difference in DRAM prices between the 64K x 4 and the 256K x 1
parts.
