[net.micro.amiga] Alegra Memory Expansion

cmcmanis@sun.uucp (Chuck McManis) (07/02/86)

Well, I hooked up my Alegra 512K memory expansion board in all of about
2 minutes, booted my 1.2 disks and sure enough Workbench came up with
803390 bytes free. (Whopee!) This looks to be a really nice implmentation
of an expansion board. It doesn't pass the buss through so it will have to
be on the "end" of anything else you stick on there.

Upgrading it from .5M to 2M appears to be really simple (if you have 16
1 MB Drams in your hand) and I will be doing that just as soon the 1Mb
prices drop to the "256K replacement cost" (ie 4 X 256K price or $12)

I have found out the hard way that you have a really tough time doing
640 x 400 animation with out some extra RAM.

The primary purpose of the note is to say that a.) You can get a nice
512K memory board now (Jul 1) relatively inexpensively ($299 until
Jul 31st, 379 afterwards) which is upgradable to 2 M. (You could do
it now but it would be expensive) b) It can make your life a lot
easier as far as development goes. Unfortunately many programs get
either a wee bit confused or don't run period when there is extra
RAM around. The answer is to boot 1.1 kickstart and don't tell the
system about the RAM. Non optimal to be sure.

A couple of questions for Chuck@sun:

Did the Alegra folks extend the introductory period?

Would you mind "starting the list" ... what programs get, ah, confused?

Thanks,

There is a program available called NoExpanMem which
temporarily allocates all non-CHIP ram so you can load programs
wholly into CHIP ram. When you run the program again, it deallocates
all the ram it allocated so you can continue to use the full memory
of your Amiga. It's available on several Bay Area BBS's, including
BBS-JC (415) 961-7250 and FAUG BBS (415) 595-2479. Please pass this
program around.
