The book is called "Half Magic" and it is by Edward Eager -- the
booklist two SFL issues ago lists it, out in a new edition, so it
should not be difficult to find.
 
There are further adventures of those kids, as well as their kids,
and their cousins.  All are delightful. I recommend all his books
HIGHLY.
