Has anyone compared the features of the (many!) terminal emulators that are about? I have a real simple need and I can't quite figure out what emulators might be good matches for me: I have a VT100 sitting here on my desk next to my Amiga. I need an emulator that makes my Amiga at least as good a terminal as the VT100 is so I can get rid of the VT100. To wit: full support of the character set (inlcuding those funny 'graphics mode chars, like the box-drawing-set) Will keep up at 2400 baud. does ^s/^q flow control (together with some kind of local 'no scroll' facility) Supports the keypad (including the ANSI 'applications mode' sequences) is 24x80 I also need some kind of simple 'file capture' 'file send' capability. (the fancy transfer-protocols are all well and good, but I could survive just fine with just being able to suck up and send out normal text files). Beyond this, of course, the vista of features is near infinite, but that's all secondary: a program can't be a good anything for me if it can't first be a good *terminal*. My local dealers seem only to carry MaxiComm and Online! and for some reason I have the impression that neither meets my criteria (although I haven't dove through their specs and so I don't know for sure, I at least *can* do that -- for the other half dozen or more I can't even easily check it all out in detail before I order-by-mail, so any help you can provide will be appreciated!) I just bought the Online! terminal emulator. It is definitely braindamaged. It breaks in vt100 mode when inserting new lines, and if anything is in column 80. I haven't been able to break the vt52 emulation yet, but I've only had the program three days. I am trying to talk to a Vax running BSD 4.3, using vi. With the exception of emulation (why I bought it) the program works fine. It has features to do auto downloading, and supports XMODEM protocol. I plan to use it for downloading, then edit locally using my Manx vi-like editor (which doesn't have search/replace!). The only other programs I have seen are A-Term, which I know nothing about, and Maxicomm, which I have heard is truly brain-dead. If anyone knows of a termcap that won't break Online!, please post it! If anyone knows of a FULLY TESTED, GUARENTEED vt100 emulator, PLEASE let me know! Thanks, Dale Call tektronix!dadla!dcall

VERY GOOD VT100 emulation; it ran without problems with VAXen unde both VMS and UNIX, using uEmacs 3.6 and our big Emacs that came with Quintus Prolog (the first VT100 emulator of any kind I've had run with that baby), and the CCALC spreadsheet. If you haven't found anything better by the time you see this, I'd recommend it for its VT100 capabilities alone. There was a posting (mod.amiga.sources?) just awhile back here of a VT100 emulator with Xmodem and Kermit; haven't tried it yet, but its probably worth a shot. Based on the old ATERM(whatever), says the posting. -- /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ Dave Haynie {caip,ihnp4,allegra,seismo}!cbmvax!daveh "I don't feel safe in this world no more, I don't want to die in a nuclear war, I want to sail away to a distant shore And live like an ape man." -The Kinks These opinions are my own, though for a small fee they be yours too. \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/

I cooked this up, and believe it to be OK. However, during various Phases of The Moon, I have noticed a problem with the wrapping of the cursor to the next line. Occasionally, 'vi' and others get it wrong and the line wraps to the same line. I don't know what's going on. If anyone knows what the bug is, I'd appreciate it if they'd post a fix. However, the entry works 99.44% of the time, so it shouldn't give you any trouble. Remember to use 'tset' when you select this entry. Otherwise, your linefeeds may be screwed up. --------Termcap follows-------- # # Termcap for Amiga computer by Leo Schwab # Am|amiga|Amiga 1000 Computer (ANSI subset):\ :co#80:li#25:bs:bw:pt:am:ms:is=\E[20l:\ :as=^N:ae=^O:us=\E[4m:ue=\E[m:so=\E[7m:se=\E[m:\ :cl=^L:ho=\E[H:nd=\E[C:up=^K:do=^J:sb=\E[T:\ :cd=\E[J:ce=\E[K:al=\E[L:dl=\E[M:cm=\E[%i%2;%2H:\ :im=:ei=:ic=\E[@:dm=:ed=:dc=\E[P:\ :kl=\EC:kr=\ED:ku=\EA:kd=\EB:\ :k0=\E0~:k1=\E1~:k2=\E2~:k3=\E3~:k4=\E4~:k5=\E5~:k6=\E6~:\ :k7=\E7~:k8=\E8~:k9=\E9~:\ :l0=F1:l1=F2:l2=F3:l3=F4:l4=F5:l5=F6:l6=F7:l7=F8:l8=F9:l9=F10: # # The Amiga is capable of rendering italics.
