[net.micro.amiga] Attaching non-CBM disk drives

< To you, great eater of lines, do I offer up my good characters >

Does anyone have experience, comments, know of any articles, etc.
on attaching discount-house drives to an Amiga?

A cursory examination of the port signals seems to indicate that
it would be relatively easy, and the cost savings could be
significant.

My questions include:

   The motor on/off signal seems to require some extra handling;
what did you do for it?

Power supply - is the Amiga adequate for 5.5's and/or 5.25's,
or would you still recommend an external power supply.

For the 5.25's, do you have any problems with the Transformer
   software (other than 'normal')?

What brand of 5.25 are you using - are there any brand
   specific quirks/problems?

Many thanks in advance.

The May 1986 issue of "Amazing Computing" had a great article by E.P.
Vivieros, entitled "Build Your Own IBM Drive Connection." He
described how to interface an IBM compatible 5 1/4 drive to the Amiga.
(He used his technique on a Shugart SA455.)
