When it was first announced that 1.2 was to be the last free update to developers, I immediately fired off an ill-considered note. I've given this (the view that CBM is evil because 1.3 won't be free) some more reflective thought. Actually, they're quite justified in making 1.2 the last free update to developers. Since the announcement I learned that Apple, for example, charges their inner circle of developers a fixed yearly fee for enhanced support and access to information. This fee, by the way, is higher than the original 400 bucks asked for by CBM. Considering that we have had three releases come (and two go), and that developers received a large volume of documentation and software, and that all these things cost money (especially times 6 or 7 hundred devel- opers) I now believe that instead of bitching about future costs I should have expressed thanks for what I got. So...Consider my previous note (of at least two months ago) retracted. On to other things... Can anyone from CBM comment on how future releases, documentation, and support will be paid for by developers? Will there be a yearly fee a la Apple? Will we see any new documents for 1.2 come along the pike as well? Perry S. Kivolowitz P.S. Is anyone using the memory speed tester I posted on any new boards? Please post the results!
