[net.micro.amiga] WCS and 1.2 in ROMS

So, 1.2 will be in ROM, eh? Sounds neat. Now, can I install those
ROMs in my WCS machine, and free the WCS as usable RAM, thus making
my $2400 512K system into a $2420 (or thereabouts) 768K system?
If no responses, I may open the machine and start tracing wires,
unless schematics are available . . .

That extra 256K of RAM could come in handy some day, especially
since it will be essentially free. I believe the c: directory is
less than 256K, correct?

Schematics are available from Commodore in West Chester, but they won't help
you modify a WCS board to ROM and WCS as free RAM. Currently, the WCS board
occupies the same physical space on the PC board and logical space in the
address map as the ROM. You could conceivably relocate the WCS RAM by
rewiring its address selection mechanism somehow, but you'd really have to
kludge it to run both the WCS and ROM on the same board. Once you did get
everything the way you wanted it, the WCS RAM acting as FAST memory wound be
no advantage over any externally added FAST memory. If you're willing to
do lots of redesign you might get this scheme to work. It would probably
require reprogramming some of the PAL chips as well, so you'd need access to
a PAL programmmer. And when its all done, you only get 256K extra -- you'd
be much better off with an external memory board with a couple megabytes
on it.
