*** Flame ON! ***

Well, I lost control and bought a copy of Deluxe Video yesterday. I played
with it for awhile in the store first, and it looked fairly reasonable.
BUT! When I got it home and used it a bit more, it became apparent that it
is not going to be as useful as I thought it would. Here after having
purchased a Digi-View, and being reasonably satisfied with the image quality,
I find that if I import lo-res Digi-View images into Deluxe Video, I lose
a considerable amount of quality as Deluxe Video can only handle 3 bit
planes (8 colors). My 32 color images or even 16 shade B&W images lose a
lot here. I had hoped to be able to use such images as backgrounds, but
NOPE, with this product the best you can get is 8 shades of grey which is
not enough in my book.

In addition, the DeluxeVideo package has a picture on the back of a B&W
looking image (shades of blue?) of a San Francisco background with a
superimposed Godzilla over it. Though the fine print does say the
Genlock peripheral was used for the shot, though I was thinking that Digi-View
images could be used in a similar fashion. BUYER BEWARE! It seems that the
animations I wanted to do are not doable with DeluxeVideo in an acceptable
fashion.

What does anyone know about the limitations of Aegis Animator on this score?
In any event, I expect I will have to build my own tools to take full
advantage of the Amigas abilities. I'd like to have SOME capabilities in
high-res as well, even if somewhat limited by memory space (at least until
the right 2 Meg comes along).

Deluxe Video's scripting capabilities seem pretty good, and pretty easy to use
but limiting everything to lo-res 320x200x3 is pretty crude. Jeez, even the
ST can do that! What did I buy an Amiga for? (ok, so the Amiga provides
better sound effects, SO WHAT! I'd just as soon add the sound effects later
anyway, and save the memory space for better resolution.)

Aegis Animator will load any lo-res image (320X200X5) as the backdrop.
Your other animation objects should use colors in that images color map.
The Deluxe Video problem stems from the fact that it uses dual playfield
mode which does indeed restrict you to three bits in each playfield.

These are my opinions and no one elses, but you knew that didn't you.
